The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is still one of the most influential R&B albums of the ’90s. It was hailed by critics and remains a textbook to study for musicians. It went on to scoop five Grammys, including Album of the Year.
While the album resonated with many and inevitably led to an expectation of more releases, none ever came. The world was blessed with the record and followed with a tour, but later saw Hill make an exit from the public eye.
Once referring to the making of the album she said, “There’s too much pressure to have hits these days. Artists are watching Billboard instead of exploring themselves,”. She continued, “I wanted to make honest music. I don’t like things to be too perfect, or too polished. People may criticize me for that, but I grew up listening to Al Green and Sam Cooke. When they hit a high note, you actually felt it.” Nevertheless, the album unsurprisingly earned commercial success.
While the success of The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill is unarguable, it is staggering that Hill has not released any subsequent release. In a rare interview with Rolling Stone, the 45-year old spoke out on why it has been over twenty-two years later with no new music. The reason being that nobody from her record label reached out.
“The wild thing is no one from my label has ever called me and asked how can we help you make another album, EVER…EVER. Did I say ever? Ever!” said Hill. ” “With The Miseducation, there was no precedent. I was, for the most part, free to explore, experiment, and express. After The Miseducation, there were scores of tentacled obstructionists, politics, repressing agendas, unrealistic expectations, and saboteurs EVERYWHERE. People had included me in their own narratives of their successes as it pertained to my album, and if this contradicted my experience, I was considered an enemy.”
