Arya Starr is proving to be a talent to watch out for in the music industry. The 19-year-old stunned in her first single, Away, from her self-titled EP. The debut music video shows the Benin-born Starr sing a break-up song that looks anything but sad. She delivers a dance routine reminiscent of the best of the 90s girl group era, draped in leather and seemingly ready for a fight. And of course that is intentionally so- as she aimed to embody feminist icons Joan of Arc and Dahomey Amazons.
“I free styled half of ‘Away’ at a time I was feeling down. It was like therapy. Singing the song out loud was like freeing myself from my burden. ‘Away’ is not just a heartbreak song, it’s a song that empowers you to stand up to that thing or person that is causing you sadness.”, said Starr on what she aimed for in writing Away.
